Title: A sanitary waste pipe system and an air venting valve for a sanitary waste pipe system.
The prior art:
The present invention relates to air venting of sanitary waste pipes such as household toilet and drainage pipes and especially to an improved valve for air venting sanitary waste pipes and being adapted for connection to a sanitary waste pipe system, and comprising a valve pipe section having a first end being adapted for connection to a pipe extending upwardly form the sanitation waste pipe system, such as the upper end of a stack pipe and a second end, and where a valve body is arranged in the valve pipe section between said first and second ends and being connected to the valve pipe section so that it is allowed to be positioned in a closed position where it restricts air flow through the valve pipe section and at least one open position where it allows air to flow through the valve pipe section, and where the sanitary waste pipe vent valve further comprises a valve control member being adapted to allow the valve body to move from its closed position to an open position when the pressure in said first end of the valve pipe section is lower than a certain pressure below the pressure in said second end of the valve pipe section ,.
Such air venting valves are often used in sanitary waste pipe systems having an upwardly open vertical stack pipe. In this regard, they are used primarily for avoiding odors from the vertical stack pipe but they may be used for other purposes such as air venting of public drainage systems where the valves can be connected to the upper end of a vertical venting pipe extending upwardly from a horizontally extending sewer pipe. Therefore, in this context the term sanitary waste pipe system includes any waste water conducting pipes having one or more pipes extending from the conducting pipe and free air in order to equalize the pressure in the conducting pipe with the atmospheric pressure.
Especially in relation to air venting of stack pipes, however, the valves are used in order to allow ambient air to enter the stack pipe when the ambient pressure is higher than the pressure in the stack pipe, thereby reducing the risk of having occasional pressure variations in the stack pipe due to eg water downfall breaking the water trap seals arranged in the stack pipe system.
In order to avoid air and odors from the stack pipe escaping to the environment, then the valves are adapted for closing the air passage when the pressure in the sanitary waste pipe system is higher than the ambient pressure.
An air venting valve of the kind mentioned above is known from e.g. EP patent application no. 100657 or US patent no. 6,532,988th
The object of the invention:
Against this background it is the object of the present invention to provide a sanitary waste pipe system and a valve providing increased protection against odors passing through e.g. the water trap seals, and at the same time reduce the risk of having odors escaping to the environment from the sanitary waste pipe system.
This is achieved by a sanitary waste pipe system and a sanitary waste pipe air venting valve for such a system as mentioned in the introduction, and where the valve control member is furthermore adapted to allow the valve body to move from its closed position to an open position when the pressure in said first end of the valve pipe section is higher than a certain value above the pressure in said second end of the valve pipe section.
Additionally, the air venting valve is able to compensate for pressure drops as well as pressure rises in the sanitary waste pipe system, and at the same time ensure that no air escapes from the sanitary waste pipe to the environment as long as the pressure in the sanitary waste pipe is near the pressure in the environment (atmospheric pressure). Especially in regions with cold climates the air venting valve is advantageous because it provides such pressure compensation especially in vertical stacked pipes as it reduces the amount of cold air entering from the environment and into the stacked pipe, and thereby the heat loss from e.g. a building where the stacked pipe is installed.
Furthermore, the waste pipe will not be cooled by the cold air, and thereby problems with internal condensation on the pipe are reduced, and so is the need for thermal insulation of the pipe. This also reduces the risk of having rats entering or escaping from the waste pipe.
In a preferred embodiment the valve control is adapted for adjusting said first and / or second certain pressure in said first end of the valve pipe section, so as to provide the possibility e.g. to adapt the valve closing and opening pressures to local standards and building codes.
The valve member is in a preferred embodiment a plate valve arranged within the valve pipe section and separating the first and second end of the valve pipe section, and where the plate valve comprises a valve plate. In this relation, the valve control is preferably adapted for allowing the valve plate to move into an open position in the first end of the valve pipe section when the pressure in said first end of the valve pipe section is lower than a first certain pressure below the pressure in said second end of the valve pipe section, and to move the valve plate into an open position in the second end of the valve pipe section when the pressure in said first end of the valve pipe section is higher than a second certain pressure above the pressure in said second end of the valve pipe section, and to move the valve plate into a closed position between the open positions in the first and second valve pipe sections when the pressure in the first end of the valve pipe section is higher than the first certain pressure and lower than the second certain pressure.
In an especially simple embodiment, the valve plate is mounted in the valve pipe section via a hinge arranged on one side of the valve plate, and the valve control comprises at least one spring element adapted for keeping the valve plate in said closed position when the pressure in the first end of the valve pipe section is higher than the first certain pressure and lower than the second certain pressure, and for allowing the valve plate to move, due to the force applied to the valve plate by pressure difference in the first and the second end of the valve pipe section, in one of its open positions, when the pressure in the first end of the valve pipe section is either lower than the first certain pressure or higher than the second certain pressure and against the spring force applied to the valve plate by said spring element.
In relation to this invention, the term spring element is to be understood as being any kind of element that may be elastically deformed to extend allowing the valve plate to open from its closed position, examples of such springs could be a helical spring, a leaf. spring, or a rubber element. furthermore the valve control may advantageously comprise an adjustment mechanism adapted for adjusting said first and / or second certain pressure in said first end of the valve pipe section by pressing the spring element, and the adjustment mechanism is preferably accessible from the outside of the valve pipe section.
In order to inhibit heat loss through the sanitary waste pipe venting valve, then the valve plate may preferably comprise thermally insulating material arranged on at least one side of the valve plate so as to provide a thermal insulation between the first and second end of the valve pipe section, when the valve plate is moved to its closed position. In this regard, the outside of at least the first end of the valve pipe section may advantageously also be covered with thermally insulating material.
In an especially simple construction, the valve plate extends substantially perpendicular to the side walls of the valve pipe section.
The sanitary waste pipe venting valve according to the invention is particularly advantageous for venting sanitary waste pipe systems where the sanitary waste pipe venting valve is arranged at an upper end of a substantially vertical pipe. In this relation, the valve pipe section may preferably define a substantially vertical flow path from its first end to its second end.
The drawing:
The following one or more embodiments of the invention will be described in more detail and with reference to the drawing, wherein:
FIG. 1: Is a principle sketch showing a section of a sanitation waste pipe system equipped with a sanitation waste pipe air venting valve according to the invention in a closed position.
FIG. 2: Is a principle sketch showing the sanitation waste pipe system shown in fig. 1, but with the sanitation waste pipe air venting valve in one open position.
FIG. 3: Is a principle sketch showing the sanitation waste pipe system shown in fig. 1 and 2, but with the sanitation waste pipe air venting valve in another open position.
Description of exemplary embodiments:
FIG. 1,2 and 3 all show the same part of a sanitary waste pipe system according to an embodiment of the invention, and in the form of an upper end of a vertically arranged stacked pipe 1 arranged in a building and extending upwardly through the roof 2 of the building. The stacked pipe is connected at its lower end to the sanitary waste pipe system (not shown). A valve pipe section 13 with a valve plate 7 installed inside is mounted with glue 4 or the like on the top 3 of the stacked pipe 1 extending above the roof 2 of the building.
In this regard it will be obvious to the skilled person that other means for mounting the valve pipe section 13 on top of the stacked pipe 1 are possible, such as the use of prior art elastic or rigid pipe or tube connectors, being adapted for connecting pipe ends having similar or different cross sections. In a case of e.g. connecting an elastic tube connector to the top of the rigid stacked pipe one or more hose clamps may be used.
The valve pipe section 13 in this position defines a first end below the valve plate 7 and a second end above the valve plate 7 and being open to free air via the opening 10. In figure 1 the valve plate 7 is shown in a closed position. where it restricts air flow between the first and second end of the valve pipe section 13.
The valve plate 7 is hinged on one side via a hinge 8 and a spring (not shown) which keeps the valve plate 7 in the closed position when and as long as the pressure difference in the first and second end of the valve pipe section 13 is smaller than a certain value. However, if the pressure at the end of the valve pipe section 13 drops below a certain value, then the valve plate 7 is pressed downwardly as shown by the arrow 11, and against the force of the spring, in the valve pipe section 13 such as it is shown in figure 2. Thereby the valve plate 7 allows free air to enter from outside the building and into the sanitation waste pipe system, so that eg Water traps (not shown) arranged in the sanitation waste pipe system are not affected by the pressure drop in the sanitation waste pipe system.
According to the invention the valve plate 7 is, in the same way, allowed to move upwardly as shown by the arrow 12 in figure 3 and into the second end of the valve pipe section 13 in situations when the pressure on the first end of the valve pipe section 13 rises to a certain level above the surrounding pressure outside the building. This position of the valve plate 7 is shown in figure 3, and here the valve plate 7 allows a small amount of air from the waste pipe air venting valve to escape from the sanitation waste pipe system, so that water traps (not shown) are arranged in the sanitation waste pipe system are not affected by the pressure rise in the sanitation waste pipe system.
If the volume of air escaping from the sanitation waste pipe system is very small, then the odors from the sanitary waste pipe system in this situation will most often not occur, and therefore the sanitation waste pipe air venting valve according to the invention is significant. reduces odors escaping from the sanitation waste pipe system with respect to what would be the case if the valve plate was not present. Furthermore in areas with a cold climate the valve reduces the amount of free air that is allowed to enter the sanitation waste pipe system, thereby reducing heat loss from the building.
In order to increase the insulation the valve plate 7 is made of, or comprising a thermally insulating material 6, and the first end of the valve pipe section 13 is also surrounded by a thermally insulating material 9.
It would be obvious for the skilled person to design a spring that provides that control of the valve plate as mentioned above, and therefore the spring is not shown in detail, but in order to adjust the spring force acting on the valve plate 7, then An adjustment screw 5 is mounted on the outside of the valve pipe section 13, so that it is possible for the user to adjust the pressure difference necessary before valve plate 7 opens.
Although the above mentioned embodiment is a preferred embodiment due to its simplicity, the skilled person would easily recognize that the invention can be implemented in many different embodiments. As an example, it is possible to suggest many alternative valve principles that are capable of performing the same function, and for the same reason the control of the valve is also possible to implement in alternative embodiments.
